program

It is not uncommon today to see thousands from the slums and low-lying being displaced due to a development project construction. Saath through its several initiatives ensures that the displaced communities are resettled and rehabilitated properly. Also, once the displaced are resettled to another local, Saath forms resident communities and organizes the displaced community into a proper society to ensure access to basic civil amenities.
Economically Weaker Section (EWS) Housing Sites is an initiative started in 2012 for the people rehabilitated due to Sabarmati Riverfront Development Project. Saath works for forming resident association at the sites and also carries out various activities aiming at proper rehabilitation of the resettled communities. 6,120 houses come under EWS project affecting around 30,600 individuals.
Saath was allotted 9 sites to work at and has formed Housing Resident Associations at all the sites for their proper maintenance

Chaganbhai

Chaganbhai, 50 years old is a vegetable vendor currently living in EWS site of Swarnimnagar, Vasna. When they were being resettled during the Riverfront project, the ‘Sabarmati Nagrik Adhikar Manch’ told them that there will be an organization which will help them at their new residence. After being shifted he saw that there were several problems at their new residence including drainage, garbage disposal, water supply etc. He was looking for the organization that was mentioned by Manch and finally hemet Bharatbhai, Saath’s coordinator of EWS programme.

Bharatbhai explained to them the importance of a service society. Through his help a Service Society was formed of which Chaganbhai became a member. They were not able to form the society before due to the hindrance of local leaders. He says through the society they have been able to bring about change in the problems they are facing there. Since he became a member the Society has taken initiatives for water and sanitation issues. “Through the Service Society we have brought about a 25% change in basic problems that we are facing, still a lot needs to be done. I am hopeful that we will bring a positive change” says Chaganbhai.
